MediaBuyerPlanner: Visa has reached an agreement with the Federation Internationale de Football Association to sponsor the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.
Visa will have rights to a broad range of activities such as competitions, special events and development programs, writes the AP. The company’s sponsorship begins with the Under-20 World Cup in 2007 and will run through the 2014 World Cup.
MasterCard, a previous World Cup sponsor, took FIFA to court, saying that the association did not honor its agreements with the credit card company when it awarded sponsorship rights to Visa. MasterCard said last week that it was accepting a $90 million settlement from FIFA, and that it would discontinue its sponsorship of the World Cup tournaments.
