Why do you say that it's lame? If you would think in the traditional way of a contest, yes, I could maybe agree. But be aware that this isn't a contest at all. Right now there is still nothing to win. Nothing. And it works already. Because that's not how buzz works these days. I think Bob Garfield understands it way better than you do, in this case.
See: http://adage.com/garfieldtheblog/post?article_id=111981
Did you really see the commercials on the Bazooka Joe site? Well, check out the blog then - http://www.bazookadanceblog.com - to get an impression of videos being published, check out all the Bazooka dance videos on MySpace Video and YouTube. It's all about the "talk value" those Bazooka ads generated . It's all about the drive and creativity to shoot your friend doing the Bazooka dance. Kids love it and they just post their own versions of it.
I think you are looking at this too much with a short term view. The return on investment of this kind of consumer generated media should be analyzed long term, in my opinion. Let's wait and see if your "lame" statement will hold. But I think you're completely wrong. Sorry.

Wim: that is really lame. This contest has been online for over a month. It's been written about in adrants, my blog, and in many other places. Lame, lame, lame.

Hi Toby: I'm glad you made changes. IMO it's still not totally clear what the page is about.
When you figure out how to make anything clear on MySpace, you will get an academy award.

Hi, my company developed the bazookajoe.com website. You're right about not having a link to the entries. Please note that the actual version is not the final one. A new version will be online in November 06. With entries and a lot more fun stuff. Thanks for the post about bazookjoe.com.

B.L. thanks for the shout out about the GourmetStation video contest.
It's been an interesting adventure exploring a new social media culture that has different expectations from what we might consider the "traditional" blogosphere. There are a lot of lessons learned in entering this space; however, with about 30 million monthly uniques in the 25-54 demo it's worth a test.
We've listened to the feedback from some talented marketers, including you!, and have modified the masthead and the layout to tie the brand closer to the promotion and to help "friends" (people on MySpace are call friends) get that GourmetStation is not about gourmet dog food. In fact, the little dog house, from the banner, that you included in your post with the copy - "Saying you're sorry with a GourmetStation meal gets you out of the Dog House" is linked to http://www.gourmetstation.com/.
We tested the updates and while the page remains "MySpace" cluttered and chaotic" we were assured that the dog food challenge was solved.
By the way, thanks for sending the photo of Bennie Bix Ochman Laboradoodle for the Favorite Pooch Slideshow. Marketing Prof readers' dogs are invited to join Bennie Bix Ochman Laboradoodle in MySpace!
