Turkey Lifts Ban on YouTube

MarketingVOX: Two days after banning access to YouTube, a Turkish court lifted the ban, allowing users to regain access to the video-sharing site.
On Friday, Ahter Kutadgu, head of corporate communications for Turk Telekom, Turkey’s largest telecommunications firm, said his firm had been notified that the ban on YouTube had been lifted, the Associated Press reports. “As soon as the court decision lifting the ban reached us, we immediately opened YouTube,” Kutadgu is quoted as saying.
The ban on YouTube was imposed last Wednesday by an Istanbul court because a video posted on the site mocked modern Turkey’s founder, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. Insulting Ataurk is illegal in Turkey. The ban immediately came under fire from press freedom advocates.
The Turkish court had said the ban would be lifted once the video was removed from YouTube. The lifting of the ban would imply that the offending video has been removed.
At press time, however, there was no response from YouTube to inquiries by MarketingVox whether the site had removed any videos in response to the ban.
