Paul, isn't it sad that it's come down to this? What's really going on? Has the business sector devolved so greatly that consumers and customers are thrilled just to receive the basics? Was it the recession that created this malaise in customer focus?

I like the Goldilocks analogy; that'll stick with me.

However, I don't agree with at least the implication of one of your points. I don't think customers ever take notice of someone who simply covers the basics. Expectations are expected, and therefore meeting them gets you nothing. Sure, in a relative landscape where covering the basics might still make you the best among your competitors, then you're the best choice. But you're still not something the customer is really gonna remember. Cuz you only meet expectations.

With that said, I also don't think you have to meet every expectation. If you can go beyond expectations in a few categories, then customers are much more forgiving when you fall short in others.

I don't think this was your point after reading all the way through the post, but this idea did strike me after the first couple paragraphs. Luke warm gets you nothing. The basics should be no one's goal.
