First buy them all Sugar CD's. Just kidding, but I do like Sugar and Husker Du.
What has worked for me in the past has been engagement- lots of writing, emailing, blogging- writing answers to real readers' questions to make it more transparent to other readers.
But I can't say I've done the binding very well - I suppose that online communities serve that purpose, but not always efficiently.
I think the more time you can spend listening to these customers and prospects, the better. Even though it's more comfortable to start with generalities about my audience, I've found that starting with individuals and making my relationship to them and how I relate to them visible to others, others get more engaged.

I hate to drag out the old 80/20 rule but an analysis of who your best customers are is a great exercise.
Figure out who they are (crunch the numbers) and then figure out how to target them specifically. We found that our best customers essentially fell into three categories, which is information that helped us a lot!

I would begin by identifying precisely what those 1000 people look like? Where do they work? What do they need and want? Where do they get their needs met? And so on....
