Taking My Muse for a Walk

Our jobs and our businesses make every effort to get inside our heads and eat away whatever common sense we may possess. If we allow those nemeses to conquer our heads, the heart may soon follow. The old boxing maxim is “kill the body and the head dies.” Perhaps the modern world’s business maxim should be “kill the brain and the heart dies….”

Numbers are not my forte, but recently my words are getting stuck someplace in my center and I am struggling to retrieve them so I can put them in writing. Not a good thing for a person who makes a living creating words for others to read. And that is where the numbers come in.
Since last July, I have written a book, posted 209 articles on bizsolutionsplus, 37 here at the Daily Fix, published a half-dozen magazine articles, contributed to two books, produced four white papers, amd wrote three presentations. And that is in addition to my business marketing efforts and the marketing work I create for my clients,
Is it any wonder that I am on paragraph 4 of this post after 15 minutes, when normally I would have written the entire piece?
Our friend Gianandrea posted Unplug Yourself, a call to rediscover our lives. In the post he says, “unplug ourself, switch off all our device and get into the real life…. in the meantime, get unplugged, have a walk, get lost in you city, discover places where you have never been before, rediscover places where you have been since long time.” In a comment, Gavin says he senses our community is experiencing burnout.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but during my 40-year communications career, this is the first time finding the passion to create the words is like a mud wrestling match, and I’m getting pinned. So if you don’t mind, I’m taking Gianandrea’s advice and inviting my muse for a walk.

Lewis. you are so right. So how come we struggle to slow down and smell the roses? Why are we so driven?
Check out this animation on this very theme. You’ll love it.

  2. Paul McEnany says:

Sometimes, that moment when your brain hurts, and you’re overworked, and you can’t think anymore, that’s when just the right idea comes through to re-engergize you for the next 6 months…

  3. You have to create the void, in order to fill it, Lewis. Walking your muse, or your dog, is the perfect way to open up the white space in your brain – so I do it every day, sometimes twice. ;-)

  4. It comes down to awareness in your daily living. Whether it be walking, driving, eating, writing, feeling nervous, feeling joy. Recognizing say: I should get up and stretch, i’ve been spending too much time with these activities…let’s defer it or recognize it’s not as important as these other activities I value in life. Let’s do some of this, and come back. Or you can turn off the radio in the car on your way to work once in a while.
This awareness is the basic form of meditation that connects us to our spirituality, and to which I try to live as a practicing buddhist.
