Levon is dead on with this assessment. Marketers are going to have to shift the thinking toward a more balanced approach to apps. The truly successful apps of the future will enable users to interact with the brand in a relevant way while providing some kind of value for both parties. It's not enough to just get a bunch of people to install the app - if it doesn't result in some sort of desired outcome (lift in sales, attendance at events, increased awareness of brand initiatives, etc.) then it is just fun and games. At some point, utility needs to enter into the equation. I wrote a White Paper about this topic for the iPhone and got great feedback. It's on our website for anyone interested.

I agree that social applications and widgets are important for marketing. However, I am at the point where I think marketers should build better applications that have more utility and relevancy.
