MediaBuyerPlanner: Typos in email addresses are a big cause of internet service providers and email service providers wrongly labeling marketers as spammers.
According to George Bilbrey, general manager of deliverability services for Return Path, one in five ligitimate emails aren’t making it to the inbox as a result of overly aggressive spam filters that mistakenly mark legitimate emails as spammers, writes MediaPost.
If a company sends a marketing message to an address that was incorrectly typed, and that address is a valid address (though not belonging to the person who had originally signed up for the email), the recipient may report the email as spam. The marketer, receiving a black mark, doesn’t realize the message was sent to the wrong address, and isn’t aware that it is spamming people.
