MediaBuyerPlanner: Just two years after it began offering archival content and columns to users for a fee, The New York Times has decided to stop walling off those areas. Beginning at midnight Tuesday night, access to columnists’ work and to the newspaper archives will be free, writes Adweek.
According to the Times, the move is part of an ongoing effort to improve the site and its traffic, and reflects “a growing view in the industry that subscription fees cannot outweigh the potential ad revenue from increased traffic on a free site.”
Similarly, Rupert Murdoch has publicly speculated that he might consider making the Wall Street Journal site, one of the few successful subscription-based newspaper sites, go free.
