MediaBuyerPlanner: As the U.S. Postal Service contends with rising costs and diminishing returns from First-Class Mail, some nonprofit mailers are worried their privileges may be rescinded, said Anthony W. Conway, executive director of the Alliance of Nonprofit Mailers, to attendees of the Greater New York Postal Customer Council Nonprofit Workshop.
While Nonprofit Standard Mail rates are safe for now, Conway pointed out that the USPS is facing challenges unlike anything it has faced before, so the future is uncertain, writes DM News.
First-Class Mail covers more than 60 percent of the overhead costs of the Postal Service, and it has been declining rapidly, mainly because of the internet. Conway urged nonprofit mailers to stay involved with the issue as time goes on. “If you are a shrinking violet and prefer to stay in the background, then your needs will not be met,” he said.
The upcoming rate increases, which go into effect May 14, will be the last increases set under the old system, Conway hopes. He described the system as cumbersome, pointing out that current rate cases take over a year to complete and often end in controversy.
