MarketingVOX: Though for just a brief moment Monday, Nintendo passed Sony in market capitalization to reach Japan’s 10 most valuable companies list, reports Reuters.
At the end of the day, Nintendo finished in 11th place, sandwiched between the world’s largest electronics companies – above Matsushita, maker of Panasonic, and right below Sony.
Both Sony and Matsushita have sales more than eight times those of Nintendo.
The brief eclipse suggests the creator of the beloved Super Mario is beginning to take back share of the gaming category from Sony, which has long retained the lead since its entrance into the gaming category with 1995’s Playstation.
Nintendo’s Wii is currently outselling the PS3 by three to one in Japan and more than two to one Stateside. And in the portable gaming market, the Nintendo DS continues to outperform Sony’s PSP, its first attempt at a portable gaming console.
