Marketing Profs Conference Coverage: Video — ‘Have you Googled yourself?’

Everyone, at some point in time, has Googled themselves. As is often the case, some unexpected results come back in the mix. We posed the question, “What have you found when you Google yourself?”, to some of the attendees of the 2007 Marketing Profs B2B Forum in Chicago.

See what William Arruda, David Armano, Christine Whittemore, Chris Yeh, Ann Handley and others have uncovered.

It looks like y’all are having a great time. :)
Thank you for the updates. Nice job.

  2. I discovered, when I Googled myself, that Purdue and some others have used my papers as reference for papers of their own. Very flattering!

  3. Vera Devera says:

I found my name twin when I googled myself! Thought I was the only Vera Devera, but glad there are two of us. :)

  4. I was surprised to find so many entries when I first googled myself. I wasn’t expecting a thing to come up! Now there are thousands of references some days — so far, I haven’t found anything bad (thankfully!) because what goes on the net, stays on the net it seems.

I learned that everyone googles your name before an interview or meeting. I’ve had to talk about my former life as a spoken word artist more times than I care to remember.

  6. Bingo Bob says:

When I Google myself I come up with a race car driver and a fireman. I wish my life were that exciting.

  7. Ann Handley says:

Thanks for the responses, all! And a special thanks to everyone who agreed to be interviewed by Matt, Christine and me as part of this video.
I got a few questions in email… “What do you mean by Googling yourself?” We’re talking about going to Google.com and typing in your name — then seeing what results pop up. William Arruda says that, from a career perspective, “If you don’t show up in Google, you don’t exist.”
    So what do you find?

  8. Matt Dickman says:

Thank you all for your comments here. It was a fun video to make and showed the wide range of “Googling” going on for personal brand measurement.
One tip that I use is to set up a Google Alert on my name and blog name and have it sent in real time. When Google crawls new content and finds you it will send an email. Very handy.

  9. Though I’ve got the “Tangerine Toad” thing covered, there are two men who share my (fairly uncommon) real name and who show up on google far more frequently than I do. One is a sort of public gadfly and so he’s got lots of newspaper clips as well as business/industry hits

  10. Lewis Green says:

I just Googled myself and I am the first four listings and number 9, as well, which refers to a Daily Fix post. Hoorah! By the way, tell David I have been googling myself for far too line, and my eyesight has been declining for 20 years. He should also take note that, like me, he wears glasses. Say hi to Matt and C.B. for me, both of whom I home to meet in person soon.

Watching this video was great! Now I know what you guys look like!
