Social Media Lessons from 1-800-Flowers: Let Your Customers Guide the Way

1-800-FLOWERS.com President Chris McCann sits down with Kevin Lee of Marketing Obsessions to talk about social media, virtual gifts, and what business can learn from Second Life. It’s a brief (two minute!) video, and it’s worth the watch.

Takeaways:

  • Social media today is like the Internet in the ’90s. The key is to experiment a lot to see what works.
  • When you use social media, leave your own ideas aside and learn from your customers. They’ll be your best guide in how to use a medium.
  • Specific suggestion: Virtual gifting is a wonderful way to let your customers express themselves (while interacting with your brand) at no or little cost to them.

  1. Ann Handley says:

More than anything else, I love the fearless attitude Chris McCann expresses: Maybe they don’t have it all figured out, but they are going to wade in and see what it’s all about. He’s talking about social media here, but that was also true of the early interactive days, as Chris recalls.

Great stuff Kevin and Abe — welcome to Da Fix!
