This conversation on Twitter today sums up the whole story of the new Apple iPod Touch, which really does revolutionize computing. And which I’m not buying until version 3.0. Well, ok, maybe I only wait til 2.0. (I think I can. I think I can….)

Steve Rubel (early and enthusiastic adopter of all new technology, who waited in line for his iPhone on the first day of sale): “It’s horrifically rude that Apple cut the price of the iPhone by $200 just 9 weeks after it launched.”
Ike Pigott responds: “The price was the same, you just paid the Early Adopter Tax. You win a t-shirt that says ‘I let Apple EAT me.’”
Rex Hammock, who endured AT&T iPhone connection hell: “I guess investors think that Apple announcement was rude, also. AAPL down $7.50. Didn’t Newton figure out gravity this way?”
I’m waiting for the iPod Touch version 3.0 because everything is a beta these days, and I’m not going to pay the extra $200 or $300 extra dollars for an iPod that’ll have more memory, more features, and an even better battery after Christmas.
Still, that is one fantastic piece of electronic wizardry! Who cares about the music and the wireless iTunes store. Gimme a break. I have a 30 gig iPod Video now. I have plenty of music. And my spare iPod is a great external hard drive for backing up my computer.
What I want is wi-fi that actually works, the Internet on a small screen, mobile video, and that incredible, sexy touch screen interface.
A few years ago I bought a $600 IPAQ that had email, internet, blue tooth, and Windows. Yeah, but they were scaled down versions of the Internet, impossibly small screen for reading Word docs, and lousy wi-fi that never worked. It’s sitting on a shelf, collecting dust.
The new iPod, according to today’s announcement, has viable wi-fi, and, as we’ve already seen on the iPhone, phenomenal Internet access with Safari. So, yes! I want one.
The decision to force people who buy the iPhone to switch to AT&T was a terrible one, and this effectively reverses this decision because you an use any phone and still have the iPhone features that really matter. And you can get a phone with a camera and video, which iPhone doesn’t have.
But I can wait. Drool…. Really, I can. You’ll see. I’ll wait…..I think.
But man, Me want iPod Touch now! And if I had a spare few hundred bucks, I’d run out and buy one.

B.L.,
I know exactly what you mean about waiting for version 3.0. As much as I love shiny tech toys … *cough* *ahem* … productivity enhancement devices … that’s always been my modus operandi, too. It used to be said about Microsoft products that you had to wait until version 3.0 for them to get everything right that should have been in version 1.0.
Cheers,
Michael

just think how though is for our poor European: Iphone is not yet arrived here, we will see the new Ipod touch in months.
And we pay them as the Euro and the Dollar had the same value……
I’d rather have the internet with the phone — otherwise, I’m still carrying two devices, the iPod and a phone.
What would be REALLY sweet is both — plus the camera — rolled into one! (Or iOne!)
Michael – and the other thing about the new iPod Touch is it’s only 16G. I will wait for 60 or 80. That’s surely next.
Ann – I’m a Luddite. I don’t always want to be “connected.” So sometimes I just want my phone. But when they come up with the all-in-one device (probably in 3 weeks from now by the way things have gone so far) I will still wait for 3.0.
glandrea – you poor Europeans will not need to get lousy AT&T service. And if the euro and the dollar are the same, i have surely missed something. :>)
“…probably in 3 weeks from now by the way things have gone so far…”
LoL! True enough. Although I’ll wait a week or so beyond that… when they slash the price by 200 bucks!
; )
About Ipod Touch in Europe — You are mistaken my friend: they are coming out in the end of this month!!
And contrary to many other gadgets, the Ipods are not costing twice as much here in the UK as they are in the US (there was a 40sterling price difference last I checked)
apparently, apple investors agree that it was insulting to early adopters to cut the price so soon.
but the big mistake was the AT&T deal, not the iPhone. It’s a beta like everything else that’s coming out these days, but a great one.
B.L. the parity between USD and Euro is an Apple peculiarity. And I hope Poli is right about the launch date for the IPod Touch!
Just checked the Apple site: IPod Touch is 299 USD and in Europe is sold at 299 Euro. That’s a huge mark up!
For those of us who are not using AT&T, we are jumping for joy that the iPod Touch is available.
I ordered my 16GB version the day of the announcement.
Stop complaining people, Apple is changing everything!
“Lucky” for me my iPod died about 10 days ago. I immediately ordered (and got) a video iPod.
When I saw the announcement I called Apple, sent back my 30GB video iPod, and ordered the iTouch. Timing is everything!
I can’t wait to get my hands on it!!!
I’m happy about the iPod Touch because I will not switch to AT&T ever.
But I also am not going to buy a 16G iPod Touch. THe 30, 60 and 80G models will be along soon and I can wait.
I have a video iPod and a small backup of patience. i hope. :>)
BL,
The problem with “waiting until version 3″ for anything is that they will come out with something even more advanced right before or soon after. It’s the way technology works. You have to jump in somewhere.
the thing with the 30,60 and 80 gig models is it might take a while since is flash memory, not hard drive like the video ipods. then again with how fast technology is developing you never know. i’m prolly going to buy the 8 gig version, im not too picky about space, i dont need my entire cd collection on my ipod, i never used the 10 gigs i had on my toshiba gigabeat, maybe like 5 or so
