I hear you, Jesse.
It reminds me of another word that’s gotten a lot of bad press – “marketing” – and a shift away from it in terms of social media. People prefer to be communications experts or conversation cultivators or the VP of providing value, when really they’re just active in a new form of marketing.
I was referring to the bad sense of networking (which I think you sensed). The glad-handing, the unsolicited emails, the insincerity. That, I think we can both agree, is for the birds.

Congratulations on landing yourself a new job!
You’ve provided alot of sound advice, however I’d argue what you did to attain your new career is networking in the finest sense.
The term has gotten alot of bad press, probably because so few people know how to do it correctly. They tend to approach it from a what’s in for me attitude. When in reality it involves building trust and sharing information – exactly how you approached it. That’s the way to create meaningful relationships, and for you it paid off.
