Got iPhone Apps?

This past weekend, I finally bought an iPhone. I say “finally,” because I feel a bit like I’ve arrived late to a party in full swing …. it seems that lots of people have been partying with their smart phones for forever, it seems, while I’m just now coming to the scene. Luckily, the festivities aren’t ending any time soon.

Thus far, I’m still getting to know how things work. But I have managed to do two things: set up my email (with the help of a step-by-step YouTube video) and download the two MarketingProfs mobile applications from the iPhone store. (In fact, I was one of 4,500 people to download one of the two applications last week!)
The first application allows you to breeze through our site’s popular Get to the Po!nt series of marketing newsletters, which are quick but powerful mini articles of actionable marketing takeaways. Current topics include B2B Marketing, Buyer Insight, Email Marketing, Marketing Inspiration, New Media and Small Business. (More coming soon.)
The second — newly launched in the last week or two — allows you to read, search, bookmark, email and easily scroll through thousands of marketing questions and answers from the popular marketing forum at MarketingProfs, the Know-How Exchange. Become a member of MarketingProfs (which you can do using your iPhone or iPod Touch or online) and you can ask a question.
More information on the applications …. both of which are free — is here.
So iPhone users: What other applications do you consider must-haves? What applications do you like, and which do you recommend that I download?

  1. Ok well I don’t even *have* an iPhone (and yes I have phone envy), but I had a blast toying with others’ phones at MPDM. The one app that was particularly fun and useful was Urban Spoon – helps you find restaurants near where you are.
It’s like a slot machine; spools for cuisine, location and price range. And you literally shake the phone to spin the dials (tho you can just push a button if you’re a party pooper). You can view the listing, see reviews, and call the restaurant for a reservation right then and there. Pretty darn nifty.

Urban Spoon is, indeed, a great app.
I think Shazam is pure magic. Hold your phone up to ambient music and find out what song it is, who the artist is, etc. It’s crazy!

  3. Bert DuMars says:

I like the Twinkle app for accessing Twitter on my iPhone and the Facebook app. Both are easy to use and are great for keeping up with friends and colleagues. I also like the New York Times app for keeping up with the latest national news.

I tried to resist the iphone, I still have love for my Blackberry Curve. But NOW…I’m totally converted. Here are the apps I use:
    (1) Twitterific
    (2) Gyzackr
    (3) GoogleEarth
    (4) Delicious
    (5) Facebook
    (6) LinkedIn
Here’s a post that has a few more goodies for you: http://tinyurl.com/6gry7a

Thanks for Urban Spoon… shaking the phone..? Hmm. I’m still holding it like it’s a precious thing. ; ) And @amber: GET ONE.
Thanks for the Twitter app… def. looking for that.

    Still firm favourites are:
Wordpress – if your blog runs this.
FaceBook – I never go to the site anymore, and browse my friends over coffee

    Hi Ann,
Congrats on the new iPhone! Sad to say I don’t have one but I do have a client that has a nifty iPhone-compatible program that I think you will find interesting.
DineBlast allows users/diners to open a guest check, order food, bevs, etc. and pay for their meal all with their smartphone and without conversing with a server. Check them out here:
    http://www.softtouchpos.com/DineBlast/DineBlast%20Mobile.pdf
Puts the power in the diner’s hands, quite literally. Enjoy!

    Ann:
Welcome aboard the iPhone train! I think you’ll enjoy the ride.
Both of these applications sound very promising. And as soon as I get to a place where my crappy AT&T network is available again, I’ll download them both (and give you feedback, eventually).

  12. I’d have to concur with a majority of the above posts: Twitterific, WordPress, LinkedIn, Google Earth, Koi Pond (great app for $0.99) and a neat little freebie called PocketDyno Lite (uses the GPS and motion sensing features to generate dyno specs of vehicles — apparently my parrot has 850 horsepower as shown when she grabbed my phone and flew off with it!).

  13. for everyone in the UK try the new Shareprice app – live share price data. A first. Well worth a look

  14. Ann Handley says:

    Thanks everyone! Great suggestions/links here.
Which offers a cleaner functionality: Twitterific or TwitterFon or Twinkle?

  15. I agree, I feel like iPhone users are having a little party that none of us non iPhone users are invited to. great phone though. Sooner or later I will pick one up myself or maybe the Google phone? hmm.

  16. Enjoy, Ann!
    I use most often:
    Facebook
    Twittelator Pro
    Yelp
    Pam

  17. Ann Handley says:

@Nick: Yeah, started to get under my skin after a while, too. I admit I love the freedom, though.. don’t feel chained to my desk. Well, as much.
@Pam: ANOTHER Twitter app..? My head is about to explode…. ; )

  18. Sonny Gill says:

Congrats on the iphone! I gave in a couple months ago. So happy that I did.
I think everyone covered most the apps I would’ve suggested :)
Oh if you like poker, get the $5 Hold ‘Em game, addicting!

  19. My own ACTSudoku, ACTCurrency and ACTGratuity are free for the week!

  20. Sonny Gill says:

Oh yeah – I also love Around Me. Great app that uses your GPS for location and finds Restaurants, Bars, Banks, Gas Stations, etc. Gives you address and phone as well.

  21. Justin says:

Just FYI …. I run the site App Store Deals, and daily I update it with free Apps and ones that are on sale. Check it out, leave a comment. :)

  22. I am a late adopter…of just about everything.
I had heard that a brand new (I guess that would be third) version was coming out soon so I have been waiting and waiting and waiting. Well, if it does not come in soon I will just be a late adopter of this current version and join the party.
All these apps mentioned seem incredibly cool and useful…

  23. Zharko says:

From all of the above mentioned apps I mostly use Shazam
i also noticed that nobody mentioned Ocarina and the Storyz app.
Ocarina is just for having fun
Storyz is for sharing photos and videos with your friends – quite addictive too.

  24. Kara says:

    Ann:
So many great apps have been listed already. I would add MeetWays. It helps you to find a halfway point between two locations with a point of interest (like coffee, sushi, etc.) I use it all the time!
