Google is still trying to get some dollars out of YouTube. Do they have pocket large enough to buy another great tool without a defined path to revenue?

Hi Lorre
Interesting question. I often wonder about what people think they will get by mining Twitter's database. I know some people think this is goldmine of information, but it seems like its a) heavily biased and not generalizable to the population, b) filled with garbage from people essentially involved in self-promotion, c) easily abused because it's such an open system, etc, etc.
In short, I'm not sure how owning Twitter would help improve Google's ability to place ads. Maybe I'm missing something, but I haven't seen a compelling description of how this would work.

Allen, all great points. I wonder if Google is wise enough to see the pitfalls of reining in Twitters open nature. I tend to agree that the world is not likely to be more interested in mining Twitter posts than the internet. Might owning Twitter, however, give Google access to data that could uniquely improve placement and success for its advertisers on regular Google pages?
Looking for a silver lining,
Lorre

Yes, Elaine. To me, that is the genius of flipping a business, not the genius of figuring out how to make a business that is built to last. Seems so much of the internet is basically filled with ideas that make the founders rich and then push this along to the buyer who never makes a return on their investment. What amazes me is that some people think the founders, in those cases, are business geniuses, but that never seems to include anything about what a business is supposed to do..namely, make a profit. Oh well, maybe that is simply an old point view - just like during the internet bubble of 2000 :)

Allen, isn't this the true spirit of capitalism? Genius comes up with amazing concept. Genius launches concept and sees tremendous following. Concept gains business value. Big corporation comes along and buys amazing concept. Genius retires on more money than s/he ever expected s/he'd see in a lifetime. Concept changes. Followers pay.

I was thinking that idea of tweets becoming the larger make up of SERPs would be bad. Perhaps you can bring back the "Feeling Lucky" button and re-title it real time or live search for bringing up tweets and Facebook status. Will there become a PPC for Tweets?
