Facebook Code Leak Triggers Fraud Concerns


MarketingVOX: With the recent publication of portions of Facebook’s “secret operational code” published online, users have become increasingly nervous about the private information they have chosen to share with the social networking site.
Noting the leaked code came from a “bug” that simply granted accidental publication, spokeswoman Brandee Barker said “It was not a security breach and did not compromise user data in any way,” per the Guardian.
But Neil Munroe of Equifax, which recently admonished people against getting too open with social networking sites, pointed out, “More and more consumers are signing up to these sites every day and chances are they’ll put on their date of birth, location, email, job and marital status. Fraudsters can use this information to steal an individual’s identity and open accounts in their name.”
With popularity comes a kind of punishment. The online networking darling is increasingly the target of lawsuits, intra-office bans and ad placement negligence accusations.
With regard to the latter, Facebook has promised to build a more powerful platform through which advertisers can control where their ads appear.
