(MediaBuyerPlanner) During a conference call with Wall Street analysts on Tuesday, Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan faced the question of the future of radio. While he doesn’t want to “have his head in the sand” when it comes to satellite and web radio, he said that people need to understand the long-term implications of what satellite radio really is, according to Radio Ink. “It’s just a nice rich business that may or may not be profitable,” he is quoted as saying.
“What I’ve seen over the thirty some years I’ve been in this business is that every industry has its ups and downs, but the basic relevance of this industry has not diminished… we can’t find another business which reaches people where they live, and which has such universal distribution, and which we think has the ability to be leveraged into some new areas.”
