I agree with you…
It is the internet that has given rise to the idea of trial usage of a product or at least popularized this aspect. Trials give them a sense of security and extend friendliness towards the customer which pleases him to gleefully take up the product, if it meets his needs.
Giving trial offers is an easy invitation for the client to buy the product and this is a cost cutting measure that reduces the cost of demonstrations of the product.

Just checked out the options on Scribd. That’s a great option as well. It seems like this offers the sharing capabilities and some additional options as well, like embedding and licensing, which is great.
I think the only thing it doesn’t address is the case of when a PDF is actually passed around on it’s own as an individual file. Ideally, it may be best to also include some embedded sharing options in the piece even if you use something like Scribd. That way the sharing options would be available in whatever form the pdf travels.

A pretty easy way to do this is to use a service like Scribd. We’ve been using them since late 2008 at Ford, and you can see some of our documents here: http://www.scribd.com/fordmotorcompany
They automatically give you all of the sharing and embed options, allow you to license your material based on Creative Commons licensing standards, and even have an option for selling your material online (kind of like an iTunes for documents).
It would have been interesting to see you embed a PDF of this post within the post…

Thanks for all the comments. @Greg – you don’t need a specific version of PDF to make it work. It’s really about creating the hyperlink properly. Take a close look at the sharing links in our eBook. The URLs have other information appended to them that help pre-populate the sharing media. Our eBook had sharing links for LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook (as well as one that launches and pre-populates an email), so you can look to how we did it for those purposes. Other social media will certainly require different information. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the article. It’s amazing how often we miss seemingly obvious opportunities and ideas. I mean, many of us already incorporate sharing tools on blogs and Web pages. It just makes sense to carry that one through other content.

I second Greg’s request – a bit more “how to” info would be great.
Did open the ebook and saw the example though. Smart idea! We are a company with loads of PDF’s of specialized content so this will be a good feature for our consumers to pass on the information to friends and family.
