If we all believe we need to be the “Purple Cow,” why do so many marketers behave like sheep? If it’s so important to rise-above-the-clutter-think-outside-the-box-break-from-the-pack, why are there so many me-too messages out there?
Yeah, it’s a rhetorical question. Because we all know the answers — the usual suspects: fear, inertia, obsession with the competition. Sometimes a lack of imagination. Sometimes sheer (or in this case, shear) laziness.
But I do suggest a path out of the sheepfold and into the light. You can see/hear my thoughts in the accompanying video:

I’m tired of thinking outside the box. I hate that euphemism. I think we all need to carve our boxes up for Halloween and put them on our doorstep. I am a shock and awe marketer. I want my market to viscerally connect with the brands that hire me. When you do that the most important think in your tool kit is to stay on top of your market and know what they are reading, listening to and learning from. Infotainment is the answer and being a pop culture junkie is required. I’m tired of marketers that stand around at parties looking down on me becasue i watch TV and listen to KISS108 but then can’t understand why I walk away with the big deals. So, hell yeah. Be the Purple Cow – but also, remember to know your market inside and out so you can connect with it.
There’s truth in that, Mary. Yesterday, a neighbor caught me reading the National Enquirer while I was waiting at the supermarket checkout. I felt a little, well, sheepish, but…
…like you, I like to read what other people may be reading and…
…frankly, I enjoy it!
But KISS108 may be going above and beyond the call of duty!
