Any Cavett fans with kids in college should send them that URL -- NY Times Select is now free to anyone with a ".edu" e-mail address. So did your blog item inspire the Times?

Found it:
<a href="http://cavett.blogs.nytimes.com/" rel="nofollow">http://cavett.blogs.nytimes.com/</a>
Unfortunately, you guys are right -- it's a Times Select product.
Good for the Times. Not so great for those who aren't Select subscribers.

Tim, this was in my NYT Headlines email today:
"All NYTimes.com Blogs Dick Cavett: Talk Show
In the first entry of his new blog, the former talk show host writes about the Bush administration's loose grip on the English language."
BUT, when I tried to get to the blog, I ended up in the land of the premium Times Select service, so maybe it's only available through the NYT?!

I have heard that Dick Cavett has a blog although I've not been able to find the Web address. I have great memories of his show and would like to hear his "voice" again, if only on-line. Anyone know his whereabouts in the blogosphere?

Thanks for the comments, all.
Lewis & Jude: Great perspective from two who have been there. I was too young when Cavett's show was on the air to watch and recall it, so it's been interesting watching and interpreting him 30+ years later...he really did take some risks.
(And Lewis -- I won't hold that cat thing against you.) : )
Michael -- Great comment, as always, about disproval and midwestern boys. Conversation, community and blogs really _is_ a way of life, isn't it?

Ann,
You are right! And anyone that grew up in Nebraska like Dick Cavett and I did, knows how hard it is for a Midwestern boy to risk the disproval of others. But Cavett risked love and hate by having and communicating his point of view.
Cavett's mother was well-known to students learning to be elementary school teachers at the University of Nebraska. She taught future math teachers using novel teaching aids like a refrigerator door and magnets that she brought to the classroom for that purpose.
Conversation, community and dogs are a natural part of growing up in the Cornhusker state. And as for alternative media - as far as I knew there were only two TV networks...we couldn't get ABC where I lived. Grin.

Dick Cavett was one of my two heroes during the 60s (the other was Walter Cronkite). I was 14 in 1969, and I stayed up every night, even on school nights, to watch him. In Colorado he was on at 10:30, and usually I'd crash by 11 p.m., but I'd never miss a monologue.
When Lester Maddox walked off the show, we'd heard about it ahead of time, so I stayed up to watch the entire episode. The next day in world history class, the teacher asked us if any of us had watched it, and I was the only one who had. So the teacher and I spent the next 40 minutes talking about the episode while the rest of the class yawned.
I watched his subsequent series, but none of them equaled the original.

At the height of Cavett's popularity, I was in the military and then on to college. I remember well his interview with Kerry, who then held a commitment to his convictions, which I admired. I also recall the Hendrix piece but couldn't be objective, as my respect and idolization of both host and guest overflowed.
Cavett did his homework and knew his guests well, before they stepped on stage. He was also quick, with an exceptional sense of wit.
By the way, I love my cat Emily (but also love dogs).
