Super Bowl Haikus, Postmortem

Depending on your inclinations, the excitement of last night’s Super Bowl may have been for the commercials. Some 50-ish ads played during the game, at a reported price tag of $2.7 million for each 30-second spot.

As always, marketers around the Internet are Monday-morning quarterbacking the commercials, and debating both the merit of the ad and wisdom of spending a pile of cash on it.

Here, we’re taking a more Zen approach with our collection of Super Bowl (Mostly) Marketing Haikus, as well as a handful penned by marketing luminaries. Feel free to pen your own, below!


Oh hey, Super Bowl
Am I watching for football?

This post is far better than the ads, which even though I work in the industry are 1)over-hyped, 2) disappointing, 3) over-priced and 4) anti-ROI.

Fortunately, in 42 years of watching SuperBowls and going to SuperBowl parties, I have never cared about anyone outside the industry who cares about the ads. That says a lot about American good sense. And who is GoDaddy, what do they sell, and who cares if they can't bother to tell us or try to lure us by falsely hyping Patrick, whose career would end tomorrow if she really exposed herself.

BTW, I liked one of the ads. Hank the prospective Budweiser horse who struggled to make the team.

I am tempted to go out and buy a six pack of Budweiser in honor of a pretty cool ad.

It was the only ad where I actually both laughed out loud. The Clydedale and the Dalmation, though they did not speak (thank god), were really likeable characters.

God, in my haste and multi-tasking idiocy (See David R's post today), I severely misspoke. I care about everyone, really. This was meant to say: I have never heard (instead of cared) about anyone outside the industry who cares about the ads.

Yeah, John, that baby ad was mildly amusing until he puked. What segment(s) finds that compelling enough to start trading there now? Not me.

First, last I heard, babies are not known for their good investment judgement. They've a reputation for losing a lot in the stock market. Now that we are encouraging them to become day traders it is going to give new meaning to terrible twos.

I'm not at all a fan of Belichick, but giving him the benefit of the doubt, I'd guess he just wanted to escape the post-game super-madness and probably in his haste just made a mistake and blew the formality of saying, "Nice Game".
