Public Radio Station Dumps Planned Parenthood Sponsorship Messages

MediaBuyerPlanner: A public radio station licensed by Duquesne University stopped running sponsorship messages from Planned Parenthood and returned a $5,000 donation.

The decision was made because the University felt the organization was not "aligned with our Catholic identity," writes The New York Times.

One of the announcements read: "Support for DUQ comes from Planned Parenthood, providing comprehensive sexuality education, including lessons on abstinence. Planned Parenthood. Their mission is prevention."

WDUQ 90.5 FM and other public radio stations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey began running the messages from Planned Parenthood on October 8 as part of a larger, regional advertising campaign. WDUQ's decision to stop airing the messages came during its annual fall pledge drive, and it is hurting the station in terms of pledges, which have been much lower than usual, according to general manager Scott Hanley.

A message from Hanley can be read here.
