MediaBuyerPlanner: Mattel Inc. pulled more lead-tainted products made in China from U.S. shelves last week, bringing the value of recalled toxic and dangerous Chinese goods to $430 million since June 6, writes Bloomberg. That's up from $152 million a year earlier.
Last year, China was ranked at number 26 out of 38 nations in a ranking of how favorably consumers view a product based on its origin. That ranking dropped to 37 out of 38 for the second quarter. Indonesia ranked 38.
"Right now, 'Made in China' might be making consumers pause a little longer than they might have," Sean McGowan, a Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst is quoted as saying.
Mattel announced its third recall in five weeks on Sept. 4 after finding new batches of toys that may contain excessive levels of lead. That recall brought the number of Chinese-made Mattel products pulled from shelves since August to 21 million.
Walt Disney Co., a company which sees 80 percent of its toys made in China, is now saying it plans to test 65,000 toys featuring its characters to ensure that they do not have similar problems. Toys R Us is also saying it will conduct such tests.
