Bloggers Seek Civil Rights, Push for Labor Union

stumbleupon digg del.icio.us

MarketingVOX: A group of left-winged bloggers is trying to form a labor union in hopes of receiving health insurance, conduct collective bargaining and set professional standards, similar to the call for organization among freelance writers in the early Eighties.

The Globe and Mail reports that the move demonstrates an increasing demand, and alleged respect, for web-based writers.

Yet in the universe of blogging, no one quite knows if the guild-to-be will be exclusive to activist bloggers, for-profit bloggers or bloggers in general.

The push may be late in coming. Pre-exisiting unions, like the National Writers Union, already have bloggers in mind for recruitment. And the Freelancer's Union, based in New York, provides support and benefits for freelancers of any stripe, in exchange for a small monthly fee.

Regardless of whether bloggers form their own organization or jump onto another, the value of blogging is rising according to general consensus.

11 percent of US web users have created web pages or blogs, per the Pew Internet and American Life Project. And over 120,000 blogs are created daily, with 58,000 new posts created each hour, according to Technorati, which tracks some 94 million blogs around the world.
