I started a new job last week at HP as Vice President, Marketing for its Digital Photography and Entertainment businesses. Think digital cameras, photo compact printers, Snapfish, retail photofinishing and DVD on demand.
I am very excited by the tremendous growth opportunities in all these businesses for HP and by the market disruptions that digital technologies provide us. I look forward to leveraging my customer centricity and web 2.0 experiences to compete with the likes of Kodak.
So here are my recommendations for your summer vacation shopping:
- Digital camera r937 (available this summer): this 8-megapixel camera has the largest touch screen interface (3.6inch) of ANY camera on the market. This allows you to apply creative touches, easily tag photos, add e-mail addresses for easy sharing and create slide shows – all in the camera. The digital camera includes the latest HP Design Gallery features such as in-camera red-eye removal, pet-eye fix and the famous slimming feature. Don’t forget to buy a few accessories!
- HP Photosmart 475 Compact Photo Printer: This compact printer is the only printer of its kind: it allows you to store up to 1,000 photos! It also lets you print true-to-life 5 x 7" photos, as well as 4 x 6"s and panoramas.
- Snapfish: Register for the best value in photography (12c each 4x6 print) and benefit from the summer sale with 30% off all gifts
- Visit our Photosmart studios, for example at Albertsons in Huntington Beach. *Update* - Find the HP retail photo service closest to you to quickly create fun photo products here.
- Download a few movies at Walmart.com
The obvious next question is: what should I do with my blog? I welcome your thoughts, suggestions, feedback, and advice on the following questions:
- What topics should I cover? Web 2.0 marketing, digital photography trends, our new products and ventures, all of the above?
- Should I be more “aggressive” in challenging competitive claims?
- Which name shall I give the blog?
I cannot wait to hear your thoughts.

I for one would like to hear how HP is leveraging using niche social networks to help them create connections with consumers.
For instance does HP feel building a number of small social networks (50k-100K members) for specic uses of digital media? Examples might be Travel Photography, professionals, or shorts photography.
How about the others reading this forum? What are your thoughts?

Great idea, Harry. We have actually already started on that path with the professional photography blog (http://h20325.www2.hp.com/blogs/graphicarts )

We've actually been working on this same issue as part of our social media promotion service. One of the biggest questions our clients fail to ask themselves is "what do i want the purpose of my blog to be?" Is it to interact with clients, develop a knowledge center for the industry, branding or simply to sell??? One of our client's goals was merely to associate a particular employee/industry expert's name with the company's brand. They wanted a blog to accomplish this. So for them, it was a simple branding play.
I know this probably doesn't answer your question but I think only you can make the call on what you want the goal of your blog to be.

When will DVD on demand movies be available from studios requiring CSS encrytion?

Erik, I'm glad you love your job. You're one of the lucky ones.
With all due respect, though, when did Daily Fix become a shopping catalog for HP or for any company? We'd like to hear about marketing tactics, how you plan to reach out to consumers in new ways, etc. That's fair game, I think.
But summer vacation shopping ideas -- all of them HP-related -- that reads like an ad? Please.

As I said over at your blog, I am thrilled for your new job and have no doubt that you'll love your new gig...HP sure is lucky to have you.
On another note, I need to agree with David, we need to be very careful at "group" blogs, such as Daily Fix, that we promote best practices not our company's products (even though I'm sure the products are grand). I think it's suitable to do that at company blogs and, at your blog, I gave you some input on what to keep covering for readers (e.g. Web 2.0, digital imaging trends). I'll keep giving thought to cool names for the new blog.

In Eric's defense, I encouraged the placement of the post (with its product placements). Generally, I'd agree with you, David and CK -- this blog is not the place to shill for your company or its products. But I made an exception for Eric's post because of his new job in a new space, and because it's vacation/summer time.
I'm willing to admit it may not have been the right call for this blog, but I did want to step up and let you all know that Eric didn't act solo.

Thanks Ann, I appreciate you stepping in. My intent was not to place on MP a HP shopping catalog - we just posted my nomination post since I had been an MP contributor in the early days. Anyways.....
Gary- we are working on the movies on demand requiring CSS. Stay tuned....

".. since I had been an MP contributor in the early days..."
In blog years (blog years=dog years), that would be about 10 years ago! lol...

Ann, thanks for the feedback. And Erik, it's not personal. I hope you understand.
