Don't You Hate a Midweek Holiday?

stumbleupon digg del.icio.us

July 4th falling... well, on July 4th... makes it a little tricky to celebrate on July 2nd, or 6th, or any day other than a Wednesday, as it is this year. Unlike Washington's Birthday or Martin Luther King Day, you can't simply slide the holiday over to another slot to pad the weekend. So how are you -- or your company or clients -- handling the midweek break?

Are you taking July 4th off but slogging away the rest of the week? Are you closing Thursday and Friday? Or have you already been playing around since last Friday?

Let us know.

I'll probably do some work on the 4th, as well as the rest of the week.

We are treating it as a sort of long lunch in the middle of the work week. Since we are still 29 days from the launch of our product, clients aren't an immediate concern. That said, we will all probably still put in a little time mid-barbecue. Maybe a little blogging for burgers for me tomorrow.

We're closing on the 4th but open the rest of the week. We may have a die-hard owner show up for a bit; but since he works 7 days a week anyway, it won't be unusual.

I just got an e-mail from one of my clients asking me if I had any big plans for the 4th, and for a second, I was thinking -- what is she talking about? Then it dawned on me, the celebration of our country's independence, one of my favorite "family time" holidays is right around the corner, and we haven't even purchased sparklers. Now, amid the rush to find out where the local fireworks show will be, grab the sparklers that I'm not even entirely sure are legal to have this year (drought), and to shuffle through the kids' closets to find their red-white-and-blue -est outfits, I praise God for having the opportunity to work from home and be here for my husband and my kids, so when I need to stop and take a moment to look around and smell the roses, I can. Now if I can just REMEMBER to. ...

We will take the 4th off to celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence. We don't really care when holidays fall, they still are days off unless someone wants to work. We are pretty loose about when we put in our time.

I'm taking it off and celebrating it by watching The Sopranos on DVD all day! Well, that and maybe a BBQ. Nothing fancy, but definitely taking the day off, regardless of the fact it falls on a Wednesday. That's better than it falling on a weekend and getting no time off during the week! :-)

How many marketers really take a day off? Sadly, our minds are usually at the office even when we aren't. But that's the price we pay for working in a truly fascinating field. We'll be "off" on Wednesday, but back Thursday. On Friday, I'm "taking one for the team" and spending the entire day doing the care and feeding of a good client at the PGA US Senior Open. I think I'll manage to survive it!

I am working this week including some on the 4th. However, I am discovering many business contacts in the USA are not. As a result, I have turned my focus to Canada and the United Kingdom.

Because of the midweek observance, we have split every department so that half are off Mon- Wed and half are off Wed-Fri. Our customers are covered and we all enjoy a 5 day weekend.

The 4th is a paid holiday where I work and the only day off in the week. We did get the chance to wear jeans all week though...always a plus. I will be taking off the rest of the week starting at 5 today and I couldn't be happier about it.

Sadly, I will be doing work anyway. I have to agree with Steve Gardner in that most marketers don't ever really take a day off...our minds are constantly working on our next project...

Apparently, many resort/tourist areas actually love the mid-week Fourth: a lot of people will stretch it into a mini-five day vacation, combining it with either the weekend before or the weekend after.

My family is in town -- it is our country's birthday, and we have the 4th off, with a few other lighter days for the week. So as someone already said - it's better than no day off.

We sent our customers a short email survey back in early June to find out how their companies were handling the holiday. Turns out 90% of them are just taking Wednesday off, so that is what we decided to do too. Gotta be here to support our customers!

Hi everyone!

Considering it will be 115 degrees here in the Old Pueblo suffice it to say some time will be spent in the pool tomorrow. Our office closed, school is closed, I say Yea!!!! A day off.

Later we will be at the biggest fireworks show in Tucson. It's very exciting here because something usually catches on fire.

Officially we're only taking off Wednesday, but we're sending everyone home at noon today (Tuesday) so that those who are not already planning to attach some additional days off around the holiday can have a little getting-ready time to enjoy Independence Day itself.

Posted by: Deb Venman | 07.03.07

Why not call it what it really is "Independence Day" and move the celebration day to the first Monday of July and then everyone gets another 3 day weekend? But I guess that would make too much sense. As long as we commemorate/celebrate the occasion, does it truly make any difference what day we choose?

Ann, I LOVE the new look/feel of the website. Great job! And, happy 4th - most people in my company have taken the week off, which means I can use the time to catch up and... celebrate!

I'm cutting out early today. Off tomorrow and will hang with some friends for barbecue and either beach or movies, depending on the weather.

Was planning to take Thursday off, but a client called a meeting. So I'll try to leave early Friday instead.

Being in biz for myself, I try to sneak days where I can during the summer. Went to Montauk last week for 2 days, but handled some calls from the beach.

Anyway, hope everyone has a good holiday -- work or not.

Ann,

Officially, we're just closed Wednesday. But I just sent an e-mail to the staff suggesting they try to shift their work so they can take Friday off.

Naturally, I have meetings but it doesn't mean they can't enjoy a long weekend.

How about you?

in the middle of a really bizzy week, but taking wednesday off to play and see the fireworks.

what happened to all holidays being on monday?

Posted by: B.L. Ochman | 07.03.07

Taking off Wednesday, but working the rest of the week.

Posted by: Cam Beck | 07.03.07

My company, Wilkin Guge Marketing, is closed on the Fourth. Our Fun and Games committee is hosting our annual July 3rd BBQ. As for me I am taking the rest of the week off to spend time on house projects, swim, play with my kids and relax. I am going to do my best not to think about work. Enjoy and be safe!!!

I hope to spend most of Wednesday catching up on all the sleep I've lost getting our new website ready for its close-up. ;]

I'm going kayaking in the afternoon, BBQing in the evening, and lighting off firecrackers at night (I think Homer Simpson said it best when he said that there's nothing like celebrating the independence of your country by blowing up a small chunk of it).

Posted by: Katie Newkirk | 07.03.07

Despite the fact that we have just launched our new website, July 4th will be spent away from the office (which doesn't necessarily mean away from the laptop). As a self professed "bbq master" I am still finalizing the final menu...

Needless to say there will be plenty of great food, friends, family, adult beverages and maybe some fireworks to wrap up the evening. Can't stay up too late...back to work Thursday morning.

Happy 4th to everyone!

I have often wondered why we don't get the 5th off instead. I mean, think about it. The 'holiday' doesn't really happen until nighttime anyway. By then, regardless, of what you've done during the day, you are bound to have a few Independence Beers! Who the heck wants to go in the next day? Call me crazy but I think we are getting the wrong day off.

Posted by: Angie Wiederhold | 07.03.07

I teach in France so I've taken Monday through Thursday off this week for the US Independence Day and will take next Wednesday through Friday off to celebrate Bastille Day in Paris. Your messages made me feel both guilty and fortunate! But I do usually work a little, at least, every day.

We closed on the 4th, open the rest of the week. We use this time to catch up on absolutely everything - new product development, PR, industry research, etc. For the most part, the entire printing community shuts down either the week before and week of, or week of and week after the 4th. We end up with about a 3-week slow period every summer. It's hard on the wallet, but great for catching up on pretty much everything!

I'm enjoying the quiet time to plan for our big holiday campaign to caterers. Deciding what we're going promote, doing storyboards, writing the copy, etc. I love my work and it's nice to do it in peace and quiet.
Just me Ludwig (Beethoven) and Wolfgang Amadeus (Mozart). Gotta love those mid-week holidays...

Posted by: Dawn | 07.05.07

We're closed on the 4th, open the rest of the week. But this mid-week holiday seems to mean to some of our managers that we're just working from home. Still sending requests for conference calls to work on client strategy
