Todd Andrlik, who publishes a list of the top 150 ad/pr/marketing blogs, announced Monday that Ad Age will soon begin publishing his list, which he calls the Power 150. As Todd explains, Ad Age can now reference bloggers in its articles such as “according to David Armano’s Logic+Emotion, No. 15 on the Power 150 ranking of marketing blogs.”
This signals a huge shift in the value that mainstream media puts on individual bloggers, as Ad Age will now have a vested interest in promoting the very bloggers that they are ranking. It's also a sign of the growing influence of bloggers, and an acknowledgement of the value of the content we are creating.
Honestly, I am amazed that no one hasn't thought of this sooner. When I started my weekly ranking of The Viral Garden's Top 25 Marketing Blogs in April of 2006, I did so because there was no ranking of what the "best" marketing blogs were, and because I thought it would be a good reference for others that are coming into this space. Ad Age can use the Power 150 in much the same way, which would also make Ad Age more valuable to its readers.
This move appears to be a very strong vote of confidence in marketing/pr/ad blogs by a well-respected mainstream source. It will be interesting to see where this goes from here, but I do think the possibilities are terribly exciting.

You're right Mack. Bloggers have come a long way! And it really is nice to be on both your list and Power 150.
I wonder if AdAge or other MSM thought the bloggers on the lists would still be around after the 3-5 years we've all been daily bloggers.

BL what I think will really be interesting is to see how other MSM sources respond to this. Think of how many publications/sites could create similar rankings for blogs from the niche they cover? Entertainment, gossip, movie, music, business. There's just so much out there, and as with the Power 150, it would be a great reference for the site, and great linkbait of course ;)
I'm VERY excited about where this could go.

Two thoughts:
1. Yes, we definitely thought these things would be here to stay. In fact more than 4 years ago we were telling our readers about a consumer-control revolution that would change their marketing and content models. Long before almost anyone else had cottoned onto the importance of this stuff, frankly. Some people got it, some people thought we were nuts.
2. It will definitely be interesting to see more such technologies used on more different big-reach sites, and as I am out and about speaking about some of the things Ad Age has done in recent years to evolve what we offer to readers and viewers and how we offer it, I'll certainly be offering thoughts on the potential for many publications to make their many rankings more dynamic and add blogger rankings. I still think a lot of people are too defensive about linking out, let alone about bringing the best bloggers in their space to their readers' attention. All that said, are we really going to keep up this "MSM" 'them and us' thing going? It just feels very 3 years ago. There are very mainstream blogs and there are very edgy mass media offerings--does the channel really define how we're classified? Shouldn't it be about the quality of our content and how our readers value us? Just asking.

It will be nice to not have to go searching for decent blogs.

Jonah thanks for adding your thoughts. I think as time goes by and 'MSM' starts reaching out more to blogs as Ad Age is doing here, the line between the 2 channels will continue to blur.
I think this is where everyone is heading, and Ad Age was smart enough to get out in front of the crowd and lead the parade.
BTW now that you are here, can you give us any more information on what changes will happen at Ad Age because of the Power 150, and when we might expect them?

Jonah - so great to see you here. The MSM and us thing might seem old to you because you get it. Hopefully, you'll lead the way for other mainstream media.
And, like Mack, I am very excited about the possibilities your inclusion of the Power 150 opens.
