MediaBuyerPlanner: Discovery Communications will close its 103 stand-alone and mall-based Discovery Channel Stores, and plans to build partnerships with major retailers for its consumer products and to explore new avenues for product sales through television.
It will also focus on its ecommerce platforms, which posted a 144 percent increase in sales in 2006, writes DM News. Discovery's ecommerce operations include DiscoveryStore.com and partnerships with Amazon.com and eBay.
Discovery Channel Airport Stores will continue operation, via the company's licensing partnership with Hudson Group.
The stores will close by the end of the third quarter of this year.
Discovery Communications has undergone major changes, including layoffs and a deal that gave Cox Communications full ownership of the Travel Channel, since new president/CEO David Zaslav came aboard last November.
