MediaBuyerPlanner: A number of high-end department stores turned in strong performances in February, but for the most part, retailers had a difficult month.
Saks saw comparable store sales soar 24.7 percent in February, Nordstrom's same-store sales jumped 9.1 percent and Neiman Marcus's same-store sales grew 5.3 percent, writes MediaPost. Neiman Marcus Direct comparable revenues grew 16 percent.
But for Federated, the news was not as good. The company saw a sales increase of just 1.2 percent, far short of the 2 to 3 percent gain it had predicted. February was the first month that same-store results included the former May stores.
J.C. Penney, which launched a repositioning campaign in early February, saw a decrease in same-store sales of 2 percent, while Dillards dropped 9 percent.
The adult specialty apparel segment saw losses, as well, with Gap sales falling 4 percent, Ann Taylor's dropping 2.9 percent and Abercrombie & Fitch down 6 percent.
