Behold the Growing Phenomenon of 'Internet'

stumbleupon digg del.icio.us

This 1993 video segment from CBC news is a fascinating artifact that no doubt gave millions of Canadians their first glimpse of the future of communications. I'm sure that this was quite eye-opening at the time.

Now, it's kinda funny -- although I shudder to think about how we will look to future generations...

Behold the "growing phenomenon of Internet."

Good flashback here, Greg. We're almost in a secondary explosion with Web 2.0.

This segment brought back a few memories for me. I sometimes chatted with Bill Cameron when our kids attended the same swim school. And CBC's Peter Mansbridge was always the exemplary anchor - one who's rumored to have turned down a larger American offer to stay in Canada.

Two things I love about this video:

1. I love the way they keep calling the Internet by a single name, "Internet," like that's an actual name or brand -- like Bob, Joe, or Kleenex.

2. I really love the description of how emoticons work: "...tilt your head sideways...see?" LOL!

OK, one more thing I love:

3. I love the fact that it resonated with the super-hip, cutting-edge, Second Lifer, Mr. Emerging Media himself! Nice find, Greg!

I wonder if "Internet" (no "the") was a canadian thing. Elaine? Do you remember? Glad to bring you this walk down memory lane. What I DO remember is buying my first copy of "internet in a box" which was basically boxed software (the original mozilla!) - wish I still had a copy of that!

And Ann - you know I'm a big geek. I don't think I've ever been called super hip - although I HAVE been told that I have "super hips" although I prefer not to dwell on that. G
