MPlanet 2006: Shining a Light on Web 2.0

stumbleupon digg del.icio.us

If you are struggling to understand the impact of new technology on consumer behavior and marketing strategy, you will find it helpful to have the classification developed by Brian Kardon, Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer of Forrester Research....

Speaking at last week’s MPlanet conference produced by the AMA, Brian identified 10 forms of social computing often referred to as Web 2.0:

1. Social Networks (MySpace)
2. RSS (NewsGator)
3. Open Source Software: (Linux)
4. Blogs (Gawker)
5. Search Engines (Google)
6. User Review Portals (Trip Advisor)
7. Consumer-to-Consumer (eBay)
8. Comparison Shopping Sites (Shopzilla)
9. Podcasts (Odeo)
10. Wikis (wikipedia)

Brian has generously made his presentation slides available here http://www.forrester.com/mplanet

“Power to the people” on the Web now comes in 10 varieties. Which one is affecting your business most significantly?

I wonder why he left out Youtube.com or user conent sites like YouTube?

You beat me to the punch, Harry. User content sites like YouTube and Flickr are very web 2.0 and great viral marketing tools.

I thought the same thing too, but if you actually grab the Forrester slides you'll see that Brian actually does include YouTube as an example of a social network (which I don't think is quite right, but at least he did include it.) There is much more to the slides than the Web 2.0 tech categorization that Roy highlighted here. Thanks Roy for calling attention to the presentation, for those of us that weren't at the event.
