Protest in College Papers 'Defends Collegiate Press'

stumbleupon digg del.icio.us

MediaBuyerPlanner: A collaboratively produced editorial put together through the editorial board of the Harvard Crimson is being carried by more than a dozen college newspapers across the country.

The editorial protests the University of Southern California's refusal to reappoint the editor of the University's paper, The Daily Trojan, to another term, writes Editor & Publisher. The University vetoed the staff vote for another term for editor Zach Fox.

The editorial ran in papers at Yale, Brown, Harvard, University of Texas, UCLA, Cornell, University of Oregon, University of Illinois, Syracuse, Penn, Princeton, University of Michigan and Stanford.

It claims, "As college journalists, we are deeply troubled by this decision. Practicing journalism with strings attached isn't really practicing journalism at all, and to that end, we seek to preserve the tradition of a functionally - and whenever possible, formally - independent collegiate press. If campus newspapers are to succeed in informing readers and training reporters, they must be more than public relations arms of universities, and they cannot operate under the yoke of administrators' censorship."

The entire editorial can be read here.
