MarketingVOX: News Corp.'s MySpace.com is hoping to ease parental concerns - and those of advertisers - regarding sexual predators prowling around on the site and is developing a searchable database of registered sex offenders.
MySpace on Tuesday said the database would include identifiable details of the 550,000 registered U.S. sex offenders, including name, age, physical descriptions and identifying features such as scars and tattoos, reports Reuters. MySpace will attempt to match the info with user profiles and will then remove matching profiles.
Because sex offenders do not need to register their email addresses, finding those profiles will be more difficult; MySpace has asked Congress that it introduce legislation mandating email registration for sex offenders.
Hemanshu Nigam, chief security officer at MySpace, said he hopes to also work with law enforcement agencies in other countries as MySpace continues to expand to Europe and Asia.
