MarketingVOX: The Huffington Post has tapped James Smith to be the site's first chief revenue officer, effective January.

Smith will be joining HuffPo from his current stint as chief of publisher services at Advertising.com, MediaPost reports.

"I'll be in charge of all revenue streams, including ad revenue," said Smith. "As the Huffington Post brand transcends the typical news blogging model, my job will be to partner and seek new revenue streams in areas like video, mobile, commerce, and content distribution."

HuffPo founder Arianna Huffington has worked hard to expand her staff since securing $5 million in venture capital this summer. In October, she brought in Melinda Henneberger as political editor. Henneberger had previous stops at Newsweek and The New York Times. Huffington is said to be looking to hire more journalists to produce original content.

The Huffington Post has grown 24 percent in unique users since September, going from 2.6 million to 3.2 million, along with a 55 percent increase in pageviews: from 30 million to 48 million.
