I Want to Be in Advertising: The Video

stumbleupon digg del.icio.us

I'm preparing for a speech I'll be giving at the Marketing 3 conference in the Netherlands where I'll be "über-coolly" flanked by Chris Anderson, Stefan Engeseth and Ilya Vedrashko (makes me wonder what they were smoking when they called me :-) ....

While I won't use this video, I did want to bring it to your attention, as it elegantly brings home a point I've been making for a while, possibly related to the mid-life anxiety of just turning 40. :-)

But still, did we really all join the wonderful marketing trade to shuffle GRPs, bicker over budgets and chase yet another piece of mindless creative which no one cares about, except perhaps a few media sellers only who pretend to like us anyway ?

Or did we join it to make a difference? To use the millions at our disposal to really do something useful in the process as well. To really affect people, even only in a little way.

Is this what you would want your kid to say ? I know my answer... what's yours ? Think and decide. Wake up !!

Out of the mouths of babes come truth. Make a difference, Alain. Money isn't what life is about. For me, authenticity, family, friends and God come before all else. Not a big deal... just the way it is.

I think everyone goes down that road, thinking what they do sucks. But in the end you do it because you love it and because you do want to make a difference. Even if it isn't life changing stuff, at least we can try to put out quality writing, quality design, and inspire people with wit and humor.
There's a lot of advertising out there that I wouldn't want to be a part of. I hate the insurance commercials that show people getting into accidents. Or alarm companies showing a babysitter with 2 kids and someone tries to break in. Even the Swiffer commercials that begin with a manager about to let someone go and it turns out to be a feather duster. Too many people are losing jobs do to downsizing etc and it imposes on personal feelings and boundaries.
Sure I wish I made more money. Sure there's always someone new and fresh nipping at my heels. It's my responsibility to do the best I can and make things happen for myself.
It's a good video and it does make a powerful statement. But it also can serve as a reminder of what we are doing and the responsibility we have to do better, always.
