MediaBuyerPlanner: Universal Music Group and MTV Networks have struck a deal that will allow MTVN to create and distribute mobile video content to be available via streamed and downloaded on-demand formats on the company's branded wireless services.

MTVN's branded wireless services include MTV Mobile, VH1 Mobile, CMT Mobile and Logo. The deal allows MTVN to create and distribute content for the label's entire roster of artists, including U2 and Elton John, writes Mediaweek.

The pricing model for the new content is not yet clear, but subscribers will likely be able to receive content via an a la carte model or a monthly surcharge that is added onto the basic mobile service bill.

A recent report from JupiterResearch showed that while 44 percent of the 200 million-plus mobile phones in use are capable of playing short-form video, only one percent are expected to pay for a subscription to a video downloading or streaming package this year.
