I have a penchant for corporate blog rankings (Top 10 Corporate Blogs, Top 10 CEO Blogs) and in the spirit of extending my trivia pursuit to Corporate Marketing Blogs, I decided to investigate the state of CMO Blog...
...(meaning blogs of C-level Chief Marketing Officers at corporations, Ad/PR agencies). The result was underwhelming to say the least.
As is normal, with all my rankings I used the newPRWiki for my source and guess what? Out of a total of 248 corporate blogs listed, there were only 12 CMO blogs from across 5 countries. Without further ado, here are the Top 10 CMO blogs on the planet (ranked by their Technorati standing):
# 10: Randy Littleson -- VP, Marketing, Kinaxis
# 9: Stefan Coucheir -- Managing Director, Antenno
# 8: Steve Wilson -- Sr. Director of Global Communications, McDonalds
# 7: Marcel Reichart -- Managing Director Marketing & Communications, Hubert Burda Media
# 6: Michael Dunn -- VP, Hearst Interactive Media
# 5: Frank Gens -- Senior VP of Research, IDC
# 4: Michael O'Connor Clarke -- VP of Business Development, Marqui, Inc.
# 3: Eric Kintz -- VP of Global Marketing Strategy & Excellence, Hewlett-Packard Company
# 2: Randy Baseler -- VP of Marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes
# 1: Steve Rubel -- Senior VP, Edelman PR

Source: The New PR Wiki (conceptualized by Neville Hobson). Corporate blog listings on the wiki are currently maintained by Constantin Basturea. Thanks to Neville and Constantin for creating and maintaining an invaluable resource for the blogosphere.
I also read a recent article in the New York Times (NYT), by Randall Stross, where he questions C-level Executives' apparent hesitancy to blog. The NYT piece makes a case-study of Jonathan Schwartz (CEO, Sun Microsystems) and his apparent ability to walk-the-talk or should I say blog-the-talk.
CEO. blogging should no longer be viewed as extreme sport. Mr. Schwartz’s example shows that blogging fits quite naturally into the chief executive’s work week. In an exhortatory piece, “If You Want to Lead, Blog,” published in The Harvard Business Review last year, Mr. Schwartz predicted that “having a blog is not going to be a matter of choice, any more than having e-mail is today."
If that's the case for CEOs, I think it's equally imperative for CMOs/VPs of Marketing to blog, since they are expected to be the voice of the company.
Is Seth Godin right, when he talks about the Myth of the CMO, or are marketers still testing the waters? As fellow marketers, what are your thoughts on CMO blogging?

I'd like to congratulate DF's very own Eric Kintz for coming in at #3.
Thanks for setting a great example for the rest of the corporate marketing world, Eric!

Mario -- You beat me to the punch! I second the congrats, Eric.
One thing: I'm not sure I agree with you, Mario, that it's important for all CMOs to be blogging to the degree that these guys are. I understand your point, that the CMO is the voice of the company, but I think participating in blogging and blogs is just as important -- if not more so -- than having your own blog.
So -- does a CMO need his or her own blog? I'm not sure about that one. I'd love to hear the thoughts of others.

Eric's #1 around here ;)

hi mario - thanks for including me in your list but to be clear, i'm a technologist, much more like a cto than a cmo...

Ann,
I think there are two issues here:
1. As Seth asks: Is the CMO a Myth?
2. If not, do they need a blog?
I'd presume the CMO or senior-level VP of Marketing is expected to be not only the customer voice but also the customer advocate. And if so, a blog would be helpful in creating & archiving that conversation.
I wonder what our readers think?

Really hope that this isn't a semantic arguement but is Rubel really Edelman's CMO?
Thanks for list - went straight into my bloglines.

WOW thanks Mario for including me and thanks to Mack and Ann for the compliments. I am flattered...
Btw I recommend another really good CMO blog from my blogging friend Dan Greenfield who is VP Corp Comm at Earthlink (http://bernaisesource.blog.com/ )

I appreciated this post, thanks. I do think it's important for CMOs to blog. But I do agree with Ann that commenting on others' blogs is equally important.
#1: Gets us close to our markets: I want to see more MDs, MVPs and CMOs interacting with their markets through blogs/wikis/etc.
#2: Interacting with other marketers: Sure there's much that can't be discussed, but a lot can--and a rising tide lifts all boats.
#3: They are the voice of the company and to that end, they are an example. That's not to say have a blog for the heck of it, but get out there and lead by example.
I hope you swing back to this list from time to time (and I hope it grows). I'm also hoping to see more CEOs blog--and if you really want to differentiate, I'd love to see a really creative CFO blog (they could use a break from P&L spreadsheets, no?)

Mario,
Thanks for the heads up on the list of CMO blogs. I have been looking for guidance and inspiration from a group like this.

Wow! Well, thank you Mario. I'm utterly tickled to be included in such august company. Let me know where I should send the...um..."gratuity" we discussed ;-)

Thanks to all for your insightful comments.
CK: Yes, I'd surely be interested in monitoring the Top 10 CMO blogs over time, like I plan to do with the CEO and corporate blogs.
Michael: Do let me know if and when you're in the Bay Area. We could probably meet up.
Some of you've made a valid point about how some of the above blogs aren't actually CMO blogs. Let me clarify, by CMO I meant senior marketing executive at a corporation/ad/pr agency. I'll surely stick to that definition in future iterations of this list.

Mario,
"out of a total of 248 corporate blogs listed, there were only 12 CMO blogs from across 5 countries. Without further ado, here are the Top 10 CMO blogs on the planet (ranked by their Technorati standing):"
Not meaning to be cranky here,because I really find your list of CMO blogs useful and interesting, (and all of your other lists also), from a research standpoint;
BUT, I also think that lists of "top" whatevers should have some relative meaning.
If there are 12 CMO blogs, what exactly is the meaning of being in "the top 10 CMO" blogs?
Were #11 and #12 just too awful to discuss publicly?
And meaning no disrespect to Steve Rubel, but I don't think he is the Chief Marketing Officer at Edelman.
I think you are correct to define CMO as the senior marketing executive at a company and then perhaps revise your list if the definition doesn't fit; and maybe save the "top 10" designation for a larger list with qualifying critieria.

I'd like to see more details about the rubric used to create these rankings -- and that could also be a guidelines for other firms to develop better sites. Is there a clear assessment rubric at Technorati?
Posted by: Ellen Weber | 08.12.06
Hi Marianne,
Thanks for your comments. Let me address some of your concerns:
1. You are right, there are only 12 CMO blogs (on the New PR Wiki rankings) and what I did was to rank them one vs. the other with regards to their popularity. Now there are other CMO blogs that aren't listed on the New PR Wiki. It'd be great if we marketers can help maintain the New PR Wiki whenever we find a CMO blog.
2. I agree that Steve Rubel does not represent a CMO, and by the same rule, we can discount #s 4, 5 and 6 as well!
3. You'll probably see a redefined list of Senior Marketing Executives' blogs shortly, taking into account all user comments.
Once again, thanks for your participation.
I look forward to continuing this conversation.

Hi Ellen,
Currently there is no clear assessment rubric either at Technorati or elsewhere.
I used the New PR Wiki (http://www.thenewpr.com/wiki/pmwiki.php) as my source for CEO blog listings. From there I culled all senior marketing exec blogs and then ranked them by the Technorati rankings.
I know it's far from perfect, but an important step towards maintaining a global ranking of Top 10 CMO blogs. Now that effort will have to come from within the marketing community.
I'm currently working on a Top 10 CEO blog listings and Easton Ellsworth from Business Blog Wire has offered to help.
I'd love to maintain a similar ranking for CMO blogs since it'd be valuable for all of us.

I tend to agree with Roy Young - a C-level is responsible for charting the future, showing leadership, ensuring the support of investors, buidling executive bridges with relevant key players, and, if they believe in it, they can be like Jack Welch and spend significant time with customers.
What opportunities are created or problems solved by the blog; by a CMO blog? It is a relatively new and still shiny tool, but is it the right tool or the best tool to help accomplish C-level goals. And, whatever tool is the best, should it be the CMO wielding it?

Hi, do any of you bloggers know anything about the viral widget called BlogRush. Apparantly it was just launched 8 hours ago.
I found it here in the top of the right column at this Ning site.
www.Linkedin-Entrepreneurs.com
It's supposed to give you reciprical traffic based on reading the content of your page like Adsense does (but it doesn't pay anything, just gives free traffic).
It says you actually get like 10x or more traffic back, due to some exponential growth aspect of it. (multi tier affiliate based on who signs under you?)
Does this kind of thing really work? I wouldn't say no to free traffic.
