MediaBuyerPlanner: ABC Television Network, a Walt Disney Company, withdrew from a miniseries on the Holocaust that it was developing with Mel Gibson's production company after the actor allegedly made anti-Semitic remarks while being arrested for suspicion of drunk driving last week in Malibu, Calif., The Wall Street Journal reports.
Gibson and his Icon Production company have been working on a television miniseries which now faces scrutiny among his Hollywood peers. The series is the memoir of a Dutch Jew during the Holocaust. His recent remarks have created tension with Jewish groups and Hollywood executives who criticized Gibson for making the anti-Semitic statements. A well known agent has even suggested boycotting the actor and director.
Although Disney has decided to pull out of the miniseries, it stated that it will pursue distribution of Gibson's other movie, Apocalypto, a movie about the ancient Mayan culture due for release December 8.
"I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable," says Gibson, who referred to his actions as being belligerent. According to The Wall Street Journal, Gibson's publicist, Alan Nierob, stated that the actor will be participating in an ongoing recovery program.
