MediaBuyerPlanner: Belo's consolidated revenue increased 1.1 percent in July compared to the same period last year, but it was growth at the television group that kept those numbers positive.
For the newspaper group, total revenue dropped 4.2 percent, while advertising dipped 7 percent. Online advertising soared 36 percent, according to Editor & Publisher.
Belo's chairman, president and CEO, Robert Decherd, said in a statement that June was a relatively strong revenue month. July, expected to be the softest month of the third quarter, was below internal projections.
The Belo newspaper chain includes The Dallas Morning News, The Providence Journal (R.I.), and The Press-Enterprise (Riverside, Calif.).
