Gawker Lays Off Bloggers, Puts Two Sites on Block

stumbleupon digg del.icio.us

MarketingVOX: Gawker Media founder Nick Denton has put two of his 15 sites up for sale, reorganized others and is laying off several bloggers - despite having doubled the network's pageviews in the past year, reports the New York Times (via Micro Persuasion). "Better to sober up now, before the end of the party," Denton is quoted as saying.

Tabloid-like site Sploid and video clip aggregator site Screenhead are now on the block, and editors at Gawker, Wonkette, Gizmodo, and Gridskipper have been moved around or replaced. Essentially, Denton was weeding out underperformers, according to the Times.

"The barrier to entry in Internet media is low. The barrier to success is high," he is quoted as saying. Mediabistro summarizes the various personnel moves - Denton explains his rationale.
