@courtney: To quote Buffett again, "View Mr. Market as having a disorder and being in a manic depressive state and take advantage of this state of disorder." $48/share is cheap for such an amazing underlying business (Dell). Likewise, GE's 52 week high is $38.52/share, and that stock closed today at $6.66/share. I find it hard to imagine that the underlying economics of GE's or Dell's businesses are so different now vs. 365 days ago. In either case, the current stock price is not entirely management's fault.

Maybe some of Dell's managers should have taken their leaders advice since Dell is down 48% this year

Harry, I love the forcefulness and authority presented in this post. I think you defined the choice for business owners quite clearly. Getting past the FUD climate in the market (no easy task), most business owners want to grow, or a minimum come out of this financial crisis at parity with their competition.
So a job seeker must put forward a ROIC argument as to why the job seeker should be hired over an comparable investment in new equipment, new products, more R&D etc.
Conceptualizing and defining a ROIC argument is surely a change in mindset for many job seekers, but as you point out--very necessary.
